The Garage Door Cable - How it Works
The garage door cable acts as the “lifting arm” connecting the door to the garage door spring which delivers the opening and closing force. The garage door spring will wind or unwind and this turns the torsion spring shaft. The spring shaft then turns cable drums at top corners of the door. The garage door cables wind around these drums, leading to the bottom of the garage door – where they are fastened. The cable then acts like an arm – delivering the lifting force to the garage door and causing it to raise along the tracks.
The garage door cable is critical to the proper functioning of the garage door. If the garage door cable is malfunctioning or broken then your garage door won’t open properly.
With most broken garage doors, one component not working properly can put the entire system under strain – for example the garage door opener is suddenly lifting far too much weight. This is why it’s important to have your garage door cables repaired immediately.
Damaged garage door cables are also an urgent safety issue. Your cables are responsible for lifting the 100+ pounds of the garage door, so repairing broken or fraying cables should be done immediately. Having a garage door slam down due to a snapped cable is a real risk – so get the problem fixed today!
Common Problems with Garage Cables
If your garage door is not opening or closing properly, make sure to inspect your cables and look for the following problems:
- The cable has snapped!
- Cables are not winding properly around drums
- Pulleys are falling apart
- Cables are frayed from wear and tear
- Garage door is not closing or opening to 100%
- Bearings along the door making unpleasant noises
- Garage door is not travelling evenly along the tracks
- Burning smell is obvious – caused by friction of cables
- Cables are hanging loose or with slack
WARNING: Garage door cables lift the entire garage door – which is over one hundred pounds. DIY work on this issue can cause serious injury from both the weight of the door and the tension of the garage door spring. It is best to call a professional who is fully insured and trained to fix garage door cables safely.
Replace or Fix Your Cables?
Our team has the experience and skills to diagnose any issue with your garage door cables and recommend repair or replacement. In many cases replacing the garage door cable isn’t necessary and we can save you money by offering repair instead. Our commitment is to always do the work that maintains garage safety at the highest level.
We Fix Garage Door Cables and Pulley Systems
In many cases the problem isn’t just the garage door cables but the system of bearings, pulleys and drums that are part of the cable system. For example, frequent problems we see are cables not winding properly around the drum, or the pulleys wearing out.
If there are problems with the components of the cable system, then our team will be able to diagnose and repair the issue. Our technicians keep replacement parts on their trucks and are ready to fix most problems on the spot. Our goal is to fix your garage door before the end of the day. We offer same day service when you call before 2pm on a weekday.
When is it better to replace the cables?
If your garage door cable is showing signs of physical damage – corrosion, rust or fraying – then we will recommend cable replacement. A cable that is fraying will eventually snap – this is a safety issue that we must address immediately. A snapped cable also means your garage door will not open at all – so it is best to avoid this serious problem.
Garage door cable replacement is not a very expensive purchase compared to other garage door related expenses. We are committed to delivering value to our customers and our technicians have the experience and skills to replace cables quickly and efficiently.
We have been fixing and replacing garage door cables across Toronto, Mississauga and the entire GTA for over 15 years and we look forward to helping you fast and for a competitive price.
